Hochul backs pension tier changes

Union teachers, nurses, firefighters and public workers packed a rally in Albany Sunday pushing for pension reform, according to Spectrum News. Gov. Kathy Hochul joined them, calling for fixes to Tier 6 of the state’s retirement system.

Union leaders say the 2012 Tier 6 rules force about 780,000 workers to pay more, work longer and receive smaller benefits than earlier pension tiers.

Hochul says she already pushed some changes in 2022, including cutting the vesting period from 10 years to five and basing pensions on workers’ top three earning years. She says more reforms would help recruit and retain public employees.
