Cornell women’s lacrosse falls to Brown in Ivy League opener

Cornell women’s lacrosse dropped its Ivy League opener Saturday afternoon, falling to Brown on the road. The Big Red moved to 3-3 overall with the loss.

Emily Iacobellis, Ellie Bergin and Lily Whaling each scored two goals for Cornell. Bergin, the team’s leading scorer, recorded her 12th goal of the season, while Iacobellis added an assist. Brown controlled several key possession categories to help secure the win, finishing with advantages in draw controls (10-8) and ground balls (20-17). Cornell held edges in shots on goal (13-11) and caused turnovers (9-5) while committing fewer turnovers (11-19).

Cornell opened the scoring in the first quarter when Iacobellis netted her sixth goal of the season to give the Big Red a 1-0 lead. Brown responded late in the period to tie the game before taking its first lead early in the second quarter. Bergin answered with a goal off an assist from Iacobellis to even the score at 2-2.

The Bears regained the lead before halftime and carried a 3-2 advantage into the break. Brown created separation in the third quarter, scoring four unanswered goals while holding Cornell scoreless to take a 7-2 lead entering the final period.

Cornell attempted to rally in the fourth quarter behind goals from Whaling, Bergin and Iacobellis, but the Big Red could not close the gap as Brown held on for the victory.

Cornell returns to Schoellkopf Field on Wednesday, March 11, when it hosts St. Bonaventure. The opening draw is scheduled for 3 p.m.
