Debate continues over Geneva’s South Main St. safety

A proposal to add pedestrian crossing signals on South Main Street in Geneva has stalled after pushback from city leaders, according to the Finger Lakes Times.

Public Works Director Joe Venuti said he will not move forward with installing rapid flashing beacon signals at three crosswalks after City Council members raised concerns about their effectiveness. The pilot project would have cost about $30,000 to $36,000 and been eligible for state reimbursement.

Ward 1 Councilor Chris Lavin said he plans to continue pushing for safety improvements, including removing parking near crossings. He warned that heavy traffic and limited pedestrian protections make the corridor dangerous.
