Ithaca could soon pull the plug on its AI-powered police cameras, according to The Ithaca Voice.
Common Council will vote March 4 on whether to end its contract with Flock Safety, which operates 22 license plate-reading cameras across the city. The system scans vehicles and lets police search by color, make, or even bumper stickers. Activists with Flock Off packed City Hall this month, arguing the data could aid federal immigration enforcement despite local guardrails.
Fourth Ward Alderperson Robin Trumble introduced the resolution, calling it a privacy issue, not an anti-police move. Police leaders say the cameras help solve crimes. If approved, the city would ask Flock to remove the technology as soon as possible.
