SUNY seeks $10B capital overhaul

Dorms without hot water and classrooms without heat highlight SUNY’s aging campuses, according to Spectrum News. Chancellor John King asked state lawmakers Tuesday for a five-year, $10 billion capital plan to tackle a massive maintenance backlog.

King told legislators the 64-campus system has cut a once-projected $10 billion deficit down to about $50 million, thanks to state support and rising enrollment. Still, he said crumbling infrastructure threatens daily operations, and the $595 million in Gov. Kathy Hochul’s proposal falls short of what SUNY needs.

King wants a multi-year commitment, similar to the MTA’s capital plan, to prioritize long-delayed repairs. He also said SUNY has lost $43 million in federal grants amid ongoing disputes over diversity policies.
