Police warn of tax deadline scam surge

As the April 15 tax deadline gets closer, scam calls are picking up — and local police say older residents often end up in the crosshairs.

The Town of Seneca Falls Police Department issued a warning this week about phone scams designed to scare people into sending money fast.

Officers said the calls often sound urgent. Callers may claim you owe back taxes, say there’s a warrant for your arrest, or demand immediate payment through gift cards or cryptocurrency.

Police stressed that the IRS does not operate that way.

The IRS does not call unexpectedly demanding payment. It does not threaten arrest over the phone. And it does not request payment by gift cards, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency.

If you receive a suspicious call, police recommend hanging up and going directly to IRS.gov to verify any claim.

The department also urged residents to check in with parents and grandparents. A quick conversation, they said, can stop a scam before it starts.
