New American flags went up across three local hospital campuses as part of a Presidents Day celebration honoring the nation’s upcoming 250th birthday.
UR Medicine Finger Lakes Health hosted special flag-raising ceremonies at Geneva General Hospital, Huntington Living Center, and Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital. Leaders said the events recognized the 250th anniversary of the United States and the values shared by the country and the region’s healthcare system.
Employees and community members gathered at each campus for the ceremonies.
“These new flags invite us to remember the courage, dedication, and teamwork that built our country,” said Jose Acevedo, MD, MBA, President and CEO of UR Medicine Finger Lakes Health. “As the community healthcare system for our region, we see those same values every day, caring for our neighbors, working together, and making a difference in people’s lives.”

Dr. Acevedo added, “Happy 250th birthday to the United States of America. Together, let’s continue building strong, healthy communities and making a difference today and for generations to come.”
At Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital, participants included Christopher Wildrick, Lead Security Officer and Army veteran; Thomas Warner, a Homestead II resident and Army veteran; and Dr. Acevedo.
At Geneva General Hospital, Harley Anderson, Mechanic II and Marine veteran, took part alongside Dr. Acevedo.
At Huntington Living Center, Stephen Rouland, Environmental Services Lead and Army National Guard member, and Ricky Vonbergen of Unit 1, a Marine veteran, participated in the ceremony.
Leaders said the events offered a chance to reflect on the nation’s history while celebrating the role local healthcare workers play in strengthening the community.
