Palmesano appointed ranking member of Assembly Ways and Means Committee

Assembly Minority Leader Ed Ra has appointed Assemblyman Phil Palmesano as the ranking minority member of the powerful Ways and Means Committee, positioning the Corning Republican in a central role as lawmakers debate the governor’s proposed $260 billion state budget.

In announcing the appointment Tuesday, Ra said Palmesano brings the experience and fiscal expertise needed as the Legislature navigates what Republicans describe as significant budget and transparency concerns. Palmesano said he is honored to take on the role at what he called a critical time for the state, pledging to focus on accountability and responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars during budget negotiations.

Palmesano has represented the 132nd Assembly District since 2010 and most recently served as assistant minority leader and ranking member on the Energy Committee. Over his tenure, he has also served on the Rules, Corporations, Authorities and Commissions, Correction, Insurance and Ways and Means committees, and previously co-chaired the Assembly Minority Task Force on Critical Infrastructure and Transportation.

Republicans said Palmesano will help lead fiscal analysis and review of budget proposals while advancing conference priorities throughout the state budget process. The Ways and Means Committee plays a central role in shaping revenue and spending plans each year in Albany.
