The White House announced Thursday that President Donald J. Trump has signed a new executive order aimed at tightening pressure on Iran by targeting countries that continue to do business with the regime.
The order reaffirms the ongoing national emergency tied to Iran and creates a system allowing the United States to impose tariffs on imports from any country that directly or indirectly acquires goods or services from Iran.
According to the White House, the move is designed to protect U.S. national security, foreign policy, and economic interests by expanding the reach of existing pressure on Tehran. The administration says the tariff system will apply broadly and can target countries involved in any form of trade with Iran.
The order gives the president flexibility to modify the policy if circumstances change. That includes responding to retaliation or lifting penalties if Iran or affected countries take significant steps to align with the United States on security, foreign policy, and economic matters.
Implementation will fall to the Departments of State and Commerce, along with the U.S. Trade Representative. The agencies are authorized to issue rules, guidance, and other measures needed to enforce the new tariff system.
The White House framed the action as part of a broader effort to counter what it calls Iran’s malign influence. The administration cited Iran’s pursuit of nuclear capabilities, support for terrorist groups, ballistic missile development, and destabilizing activities across the Middle East.
The statement describes Iran as the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism and accuses the regime of backing proxy militias that have targeted U.S. forces, allies, and regional partners. It also points to human rights abuses inside Iran, including violent crackdowns on protesters.
The administration said the order builds on President Trump’s long-standing position that Iran must never obtain a nuclear weapon. Officials highlighted his withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal during his first term and the restoration of “maximum pressure” after returning to office.
The White House said the president will continue using economic, diplomatic, and military tools to confront hostile regimes and hold countries accountable for supporting them.
