Former Geneva Legion leader sentenced to state prison

A prison sentence capped a long-running financial crime case in Ontario County Court this week. It centered around a former commander of the Geneva American Legion, who fled New York State to avoid charges initially.

Dale H. Mosher received a three- to nine-year state prison sentence after pleading guilty to second-degree grand larceny, a Class C felony, in full satisfaction of all charges, according to the Ontario County District Attorney’s Office.

The sentencing took place in front of Judge Kristina Karle, with District Attorney Jason MacBride representing the People. The court also ordered Mosher to pay $10,000 in restitution for losses not covered by insurance and issued four orders of protection.

During the hearing, Judge Karle read several victim impact statements aloud. Many of the victims attended the proceedings in person.

Those statements will become part of Mosher’s pre-sentence investigation report, which officials will send to the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.

MacBride spoke directly to the broader harm caused by the crime, pointing to its impact on individual victims, local veterans, and the American Legion.

“While no sentence can undo the harm that was done, it is my hope that the resolution of this case will bring a measure of healing to an organization that means so much to its community and to the veterans it serves,” MacBride said. “These crimes impacted not just individual victims, but a place of trust and support for those who have already given so much. Today’s sentence holds the defendant accountable and affirms that this community stands with its veterans.”

MacBride also thanked the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office for its investigation. He gave special recognition to retired Investigator Doug Smith, who traveled across New York State to collect key evidence in the case.

After the sentencing, MacBride met privately with victims to explain the outcome and answer questions about the case.
