Tour Cayuga launches nonprofit fundraising program

Local nonprofits in Cayuga County now have a new resource to strengthen their fundraising skills.

The Cayuga County Office of Tourism has launched a free Fund Development Incubator, a seven-session educational program designed to help nonprofit organizations improve fundraising planning and confidence.

Tour Cayuga selected Syracuse-based consultant Charlene Tarver to lead the program through a request for proposals process. Tarver brings more than 25 years of experience in nonprofit leadership and fundraising, including raising more than $150 million for major organizations.

The program focuses on practical tools nonprofits can use right away. Topics include fundraising fundamentals, building action plans, strategic planning, donor management, marketing and branding, and strategies for major gifts and planned giving.

Tarver said many nonprofits face increasing pressure from budget cuts and limited resources. She noted that many organizations raise $500,000 or less each year and need creative, strategic approaches to fund development.

The incubator began with a mix-and-mingle event last fall and continues with monthly sessions held on the fourth Thursday from January through July. Winter sessions take place virtually, with in-person meetings starting in April and a graduation reception planned for August.

Enrollment remains open through the second session on February 26. Nonprofit professionals from across Cayuga County already participated in the first session, which focused on donor engagement and storytelling.
