Man held on $5K bail after groping teen in Cayuga

Deputies arrested a Cayuga man after a reported sex offense involving a teenage victim inside a village residence. Investigators say the incident happened in the middle of the afternoon.

Edward J. Copes Jr., 43, of Cayuga, was arrested Jan. 19 around 5:30 p.m. Cayuga County sheriff’s deputies charged him with forcible touching, a misdemeanor under state law.

Deputies responded to a home in the Village of Cayuga around 3:53 p.m. for a reported sex offense. Investigators determined that Copes sexually touched a 19-year-old woman without her consent.

Copes was taken to the Cayuga County Jail for processing and arraigned at CAP Court. Bail was set at $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Aurelius Town Court on Jan. 28 at 7 p.m.
