Police locked down Keuka College early Wednesday after a social media post claimed a man with a gun was walking around campus.
Yates County deputies and New York State Police responded around 12:54 a.m. to the college at 141 Central Avenue after a report surfaced on the app YikYak. The post described a male carrying a backpack and a gun and allegedly entering a campus building.
The college was placed on lockdown as deputies and state troopers rushed to the scene. Law enforcement arrived within about four minutes and remained on campus for several hours, conducting searches and interviewing people.
After the investigation, authorities said they found no evidence of a valid threat to the campus or surrounding community. The lockdown was lifted once police determined the report was unfounded.
Sheriff Frank Ryan said officers will continue investigating to identify the source of the report. Deputies from the Yates County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police troopers, and Keuka College campus security and administrators assisted in the response.
No injuries were reported.
