Judge pauses Thruway toll surcharge

A judge stepped in to freeze a new trucking fee that critics call a hidden toll hike, according to the Times Union. A temporary restraining order now blocks the New York State Thruway Authority from rolling out a 1% surcharge tied to commercial toll processing.

The move came after BestPass sued, arguing the authority pushed the change through without transparency and unfairly targeted toll management companies like BestPass and PrePass. Trucking groups warn the fee would raise costs statewide and ripple into higher prices for goods.

Thruway officials insist the charge isn’t a toll increase and say it updates outdated agreements. The judge’s order keeps the fee on hold until at least late February while the case moves forward.
