Authorities are warning Ontario County residents about a scam in which callers pose as sheriff’s deputies and demand money over the phone.
The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office issued an urgent alert after several residents reported receiving calls from someone claiming to be a deputy and requesting payment to cover a family member’s bail.
According to the sheriff’s office, the caller asks victims to send money using cash, credit cards, or payment apps such as Venmo.
Officials stressed that neither the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office nor any court will ever ask for or demand payment over the phone.
“If you receive such a call, do not provide any personal information or make any payments,” the sheriff’s office said in the alert. Residents are advised to hang up immediately.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call is encouraged to contact the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office directly at 585-394-4560 to verify the situation.
The sheriff’s office also urged residents to share the warning with friends and family to help prevent others from falling victim to the scam.
