State officials now hold the key. The New York Court of Appeals is reviewing whether the town’s closure law is valid, while the New York Department of Environmental Conservation continues to study a long-pending request to expand the landfill and extend operations to at least 2040.

With no firm timeline from either agency, residents, environmental groups, and the landfill’s operator remain stuck waiting.
