A felony drug arrest pushed Geneva officials into action as City Council voted to trigger an ethics review, according to the Finger Lakes Times. The council approved a 7–1 referral sending the matter to the city’s Board of Ethical Review.
The case centers on Councilor-at-Large Ahmad Whitfield, who faces multiple felony drug charges after a Jan. 7 arrest. Mayor Jim Cecere said the move protects due process and does not presume guilt.
One councilor called the referral premature, while others stressed the board can only recommend censure. Cecere said removal from office would require a conviction. Whitfield did not attend the meeting and has not entered a plea in the ethics matter.
