A water main break dropped system pressure in the village of Cato, prompting a boil water order Saturday morning, according to officials. They say the loss of pressure increases the risk of harmful microbes entering the water.
The Cayuga County Health Department says residents should boil tap water for one minute before use or rely on state-certified bottled water. Officials say people should use boiled or bottled water for drinking, ice, dishes, brushing teeth, and infant formula.
Crews are repairing the break, and the village will test the water before lifting the order. Officials expect the advisory to remain in effect for several days.
