Hochul opens $67.5M playground grants

New York communities can now apply for millions in state funding to build and upgrade playgrounds.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the opening of NY PLAYS grant applications Tuesday, launching a $67.5 million competitive program to support new and renovated public playgrounds across the state. The funding targets municipalities and nonprofit organizations and focuses on creating inclusive play spaces for children of all abilities.

The New York Places for Learning, Activity, and Youth Socialization initiative aims to expand outdoor play and strengthen community connections. State officials say outdoor play supports physical health, emotional well-being, and social development, especially for children.

“Playgrounds are where kids build confidence, friendships, and lifelong healthy habits,” Hochul said. She said the program invests in the health of children and the strength of neighborhoods statewide.

Funding priorities and eligibility

At least $35 million of the total funding will go to playground projects in underserved communities. State leaders say that requirement helps ensure more equitable access to safe, high-quality outdoor spaces.

Eligible applicants can seek grants ranging from $100,000 to $2.5 million. The money can cover land acquisition, design, construction, major renovations, playground equipment, and other related capital costs. Applicants must provide a 20 percent local match. For-profit organizations cannot apply.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation oversees the program, while the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York administers it.

Application timeline

The request for applications and supporting materials became available January 6 on DASNY’s website. The state will host an informational webinar for potential applicants on February 13.

Applications will be accepted from May 4 through June 15. Officials plan to announce grant awards no earlier than August 3, following a competitive review process based on community need, readiness, and public benefit.

State leaders say NY PLAYS builds on Hochul’s broader Unplug and Play Initiative, which promotes outdoor recreation and in-person connection. That initiative already includes hundreds of millions of dollars for pools, community centers, and recreational infrastructure statewide.
