Thousands of New Yorkers waiting on heating help should see relief soon, according to News10NBC.
State officials said most delayed Home Energy Assistance Program payments should reach utility accounts by the end of this week. A federal shutdown pushed back the Dec. 1 application start, slowing payments for households that usually receive benefits automatically through SNAP or public assistance.
The New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance said it began processing payments once HEAP opened. Utilities like RG&E urge customers struggling to pay to call and set up payment plans while funds process.
Emergency HEAP benefits also became available statewide on Jan. 2.
