DEC sets 2026 guide exam dates

People interested in becoming licensed outdoor guides in New York can now plan ahead for 2026.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation announced the exam schedule for its Licensed Guide Program, which certifies individuals to offer outdoor guiding services for hire. The exams will be offered online and free of charge throughout the year.

Licensed guides may provide services such as instructing or assisting others with camping, fishing, hiking, hunting, paddling, rock climbing, and ice climbing.

DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton said offering the exams online helps expand access and simplify the process for applicants.

“As part of our ongoing efforts to enhance the customer experience, DEC is proud to offer these free examinations online,” Lefton said. “This process makes it easier for individuals to apply and take part in helping others safely and responsibly enjoy New York’s incredible outdoor recreational opportunities.”

Who can apply

Applicants must be at least 18 years old. New York residency is not required to obtain a guide license.

Most exams will be conducted online. One in-person exam will be offered March 28 at the New York State Outdoor Guides Association Winter Rendezvous meeting.

Exam schedule highlights

Online exams are scheduled multiple times from January through October, with most available from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. on the exam date. Registration deadlines typically fall one day before each exam.

Upcoming exam dates include Jan. 29, Feb. 20, April 14, May 12, June 11, July 9, Aug. 21, Sept. 15, and Oct. 23.

How to register

Applicants must register in advance through DEC’s Licensed Guide Exams Registration website. After registering, applicants will receive an email with a one-time link to access the exam on the scheduled date.

Those who pass the exam will receive instructions on how to apply for a guide license. DEC advises applicants not to submit license applications or fees until after passing the exam.

Study materials, including an exam outline and study guide, are available on DEC’s Licensed Guide Program webpage.
