Campers who love helping others enjoy the outdoors can now apply to become a DEC Campground Ambassador for the 2026 season.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced it is accepting applications for volunteers who will help welcome and assist campers in the Adirondack and Catskill parks. Applications are due by January 30.
The Campground Ambassador program pairs experienced, outdoor-minded volunteers with DEC campground staff. Ambassadors help less-experienced campers feel comfortable, share tips, and lead fun, environmentally themed activities.
DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton said the program plays a key role in creating a positive camping experience.
“Providing exciting programming for our campers all season long is integral to the ongoing success of DEC’s affordable Adirondack and Catskill campgrounds,” Lefton said. “Campground Ambassadors assist DEC staff by enhancing the customer service experience at our facilities and conduct fun, educational, and meaningful activities.”
What ambassadors do
Ambassadors help connect campers and day users to nature through hands-on activities and educational programs. DEC is encouraging New Yorkers who are passionate about camping and the outdoors to apply.
The program also supports Gov. Kathy Hochul’s “Get Offline, Get Outside” initiative, which promotes physical and mental health by encouraging families to step away from screens and enjoy time outdoors.
Where and when volunteers serve
Ambassadors commit to serving two weeks during DEC’s core camping season, which runs from July through Labor Day. In return, DEC provides a campsite for the duration of the volunteer’s stay.
Participating locations include Catskills sites such as Kenneth L. Wilson Campground and North South Lake Campground, along with numerous Adirondack locations including Fish Creek Pond, Cranberry Lake, Buck Pond, and Rogers Rock campgrounds.
How to apply
Applications for the 2026 season are available online and must be submitted by January 30. Full program details and the application link are available on DEC’s website.
DEC operates 51 campgrounds and four day-use areas across the Adirondack and Catskill Forest Preserves, welcoming millions of visitors each year.
