New Yorkers can once again stock up on affordable trees and shrubs as DEC’s annual spring seedling sale gets underway.
The Department of Environmental Conservation announced the Colonel William F. Fox Memorial Saratoga Tree Nursery seedling sale is now open and will run through May 13.
The sale offers low-cost, locally grown trees and shrubs to encourage planting projects that protect natural resources and support future forests across the state.
“DEC’s Saratoga Tree Nursery annual seedling sale is a simple, affordable way for New Yorkers to help create wildlife habitat, clean our air and water, reduce flooding, lower summer temperatures, and improve the quality of life in their communities,” DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton said.
Trees that make a difference
DEC’s nursery grows more than 50 conifer and hardwood species using local seed sources. Officials say this helps ensure the seedlings thrive in New York’s climate.
Seedlings are sold bare root, at least five inches tall, and between one and three years old, depending on the species. Orders are sold in bundles of 25 or more, with several mixed-species options available.
Each tree planted also counts toward the state’s goal of planting 25 million trees by 2033, part of Gov. Kathy Hochul’s broader environmental initiative.
Free seedlings for schools
DEC is also accepting applications for its School Seedling Program through March 27.
Schools and youth education organizations can apply to receive 50 free seedlings to plant with students. The program aims to build environmental stewardship and give students hands-on learning opportunities tied to science and conservation.
Eligible applicants include public and private schools, homeschool groups applying through an organization, and youth education programs, as long as trees are planted within New York State.
How to participate
Orders for the seedling sale can be placed by calling the Saratoga Tree Nursery during regular business hours. More details about available species, pricing, and ordering instructions are available on DEC’s website.
Schools and educators interested in the School Seedling Program can also apply online or contact the nursery directly for assistance.
