Millions to get new Social Security payment schedule and bigger checks in 2026

2026 Social Security Payment Schedule and COLA increase

Millions of Social Security recipients are starting 2026 with larger monthly payments and a revised benefit schedule, as a higher cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) takes effect nationwide.

The Social Security Administration confirmed that benefits rose 2.8% for 2026, up from a 2.5% increase in 2025, boosting payments for retirees, survivors, people with disabilities, and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients.

Why Social Security checks are bigger in 2026

The annual COLA is designed to help benefits keep pace with inflation. For most recipients, the increase is already reflected in January payments.

What the 2.8% COLA means in real dollars:

  • Average Social Security benefit: about $56 more per month
  • Typical monthly benefit near $2,000
  • Full retirement age maximum benefit: $4,152 per month, up from $4,018 in 2025
  • Maximum benefit at age 70: $5,251 per month, up from $5,108 last year

According to the Social Security Administration, more than 70 million Americans receive Social Security or SSI benefits each month.

How the 2026 Social Security payment schedule works

Most Social Security benefits are paid on Wednesdays, based on the recipientโ€™s birth date:

  • Birth dates 1stโ€“10th: Second Wednesday
  • Birth dates 11thโ€“20th: Third Wednesday
  • Birth dates 21stโ€“31st: Fourth Wednesday

January 2026 Social Security payment dates

  • Jan. 14: Birth dates 1โ€“10
  • Jan. 21: Birth dates 11โ€“20
  • Jan. 28: Birth dates 21โ€“31

SSI recipients received their first boosted payment Dec. 31, 2025, because Jan. 1 is a federal holiday.

SSI benefit increases and โ€œdouble paymentโ€ months

SSI payments also increased in 2026:

  • Individuals: $967 โ†’ $994 per month
  • Couples: $1,450 โ†’ $1,491 per month

Because of calendar quirks, SSI recipients will see double-payment months in:

  • July
  • October
  • December

These occur when the first of the following month falls on a weekend or holiday, pushing payments earlier.

What beneficiaries should know going forward

  • Payments follow the regular Wednesday schedule for most of the year
  • Some months include early or double SSI payments due to holidays
  • The 2.8% COLA applies automaticallyโ€”no action required

For many retirees and fixed-income households, the 2026 COLA provides modest but important relief as everyday costs remain elevated.
