Lawmakers push for more prison reforms

Two inmate deaths and a rogue correction officers’ strike have shaken up New York’s prison system — and lawmakers say they’re not done fixing it, according to the Times Union.

State leaders passed a reform package in June after video surfaced showing correction officers fatally beating Robert L. Brooks. The attack, and a similar death weeks later, sparked outrage. Meanwhile, officers at multiple prisons walked off the job over safety concerns, prompting Gov. Kathy Hochul to send in the National Guard.

The new law adds oversight and video rules, but Democrats plan more in 2026 — including parole and sentencing reform. A working group also proposed updates to the HALT Act, which limits solitary confinement.
