Delgado sharpens contrast with Hochul

Antonio Delgado is stepping up his pitch to Finger Lakes voters as he prepares to face Gov. Kathy Hochul in the Democratic primary for governor.

Delgado, New York’s lieutenant governor, introduced his campaign to the region this week and framed the race as a clear choice about leadership and priorities ahead of the June 23, 2026, primary.

In his message, Delgado pointed to his background representing upstate New York in Congress and serving as lieutenant governor. He said his decision to run came after what he described as repeated disagreements with choices made by the governor’s office.

Delgado criticized Hochul’s approval of the Greenidge Bitcoin mining facility, saying it threatens the Finger Lakes and undermines the state’s climate law. He also raised concerns about pending decisions on the Seneca Meadows landfill and a proposed data center near Cayuga Lake, arguing those outcomes could shape the region for decades.

Hochul, New York’s first female governor, has promoted a record focused on economic recovery, affordability, public safety, reproductive rights, and climate action. Since taking office, she has said her administration has delivered relief for working and middle-class families, supported small businesses, and positioned New York as a national leader on climate and equity.

Delgado said voters he has met across the Finger Lakes want a governor who puts communities ahead of powerful interests. He said his platform includes taxing the ultra-wealthy, building affordable housing, delivering universal child care and health care, protecting immigrant communities, and expanding renewable energy.

Delgado encouraged Finger Lakes residents to get involved with his campaign through volunteering or donations as the primary contest with Hochul takes shape.
