Thin ice can turn dangerous fast, and state officials want anglers to slow down before stepping out this winter.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation issued a safety advisory reminding ice anglers to stay vigilant as ice fishing season gets underway. DEC says an earlier-than-usual start to the season makes caution even more important.
“Ice fishing is a great way to get outdoors, connect with nature, and make the most of the abundant winter fishing opportunities here in New York State,” DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton said. “As with any activity, practicing safety is key, especially when it comes to recreating on ice.”
DEC urges anglers to check ice thickness before leaving shore. Four inches of solid, clear ice is usually considered safe for people on foot. Officials warn conditions can change quickly, even on the same lake or pond.
Anglers should watch for areas with moving water, boat docks, and shoreline bubblers that keep ice from forming. DEC recommends checking ice thickness in multiple spots using an auger or a spud bar.
Fishing with a group can also improve safety. Local bait and tackle shops can help anglers find out where ice conditions are safer and what fish are biting.
DEC is also encouraging newcomers to try ice fishing during the free freshwater fishing weekend on Feb. 14 and 15. Fishing licenses are not required on those days, making it easier for beginners to give it a try.
The agency offers several tools for anglers looking to learn more. Resources include the Ice Fishing chapter of DEC’s I FISH NY Beginners Guide, a series of instructional ice fishing videos on DEC’s YouTube channel, and the HuntFishNY app, which provides regulations and access information.
DEC also reminded anglers to follow baitfish regulations to prevent the spread of invasive species and fish diseases. Officials recommend using only certified, disease-free baitfish from licensed sellers and properly disposing of unused bait on dry land.
Fishing licenses remain required outside free fishing days and are valid for 365 days from purchase.
