Sabres fire associate GM Jason Karmanos in first move under Jarmo Kekalainen

Jarmo Kekalainen made his first personnel move since assuming control of the Buffalo Sabres’ hockey operations, dismissing associate general manager Jason Karmanos on Saturday.

Karmanos had spent five seasons with the organization and played a key role in overseeing the Sabres’ top AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans. He joined Buffalo after a long background in NHL front offices, beginning his career in 1998 with the Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes organization. The son of former Whalers and Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos, Jason later spent time with the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he was part of two Stanley Cup–winning teams.

“We thank Jason for his contributions to the Buffalo Sabres and Rochester Americans and wish him the best in his future endeavors,” Kekalainen said in a statement.

The move comes less than a week after owner Terry Pegula elevated Kekalainen to general manager following the firing of Kevyn Adams. Kekalainen, 59, brings significant experience to the role, having served as general manager of the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2013 through 2024.

The Sabres currently own the NHL’s longest active playoff drought, having last qualified for the postseason in 2011. Sitting at the bottom of the Atlantic Division, the franchise is on pace to miss the playoffs for a 15th consecutive season.
