A clerical error in local tax rates prompted action when the Yates County Legislature met this week.
Lawmakers approved several resolutions at their Dec. 16 meeting in Penn Yan, including corrections to 2026 tax rates and authorization of a separation agreement involving the sheriff’s office .
Tax rate errors corrected
Legislators approved a resolution amending the county’s 2026 equalization and apportionment table after officials found an error in the Town of Jerusalem’s county tax rate.
The updated resolution corrects the county tax rate and total taxes raised for Jerusalem while keeping the overall 2026 county levy unchanged.
A second resolution amended the 2026 town and county tax rate summary. That action also corrected the Town of Jerusalem’s county tax rate so it matches the revised county figures.
Agreement authorized with deputy sheriff unit
In a separate action, lawmakers authorized the chair of the Legislature and the Yates County sheriff to sign a separation agreement and release.
The agreement involves the New York State Law Enforcement Officers Union, Council 82, AFSCME, AFL-CIO, Deputy Sheriffs Unit Local 1869, and a unit member. The resolution states the agreement serves the county’s best interests.
Copies of the resolution will go to the sheriff, union representatives, and county administration and finance officials.
