Phone scammers are again posing as law enforcement and pressuring residents to send money, the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office warns.
The Sheriff’s Office issued a scam alert December 15 after receiving multiple reports of callers claiming to represent the “Sheriff’s Office” or the “Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.” Officials say the callers tell people they have outstanding warrants, judgments, or fines that must be handled immediately.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the callers demand payment through gift cards purchased at local pharmacies, wire transfers, or other methods. The scammers then ask victims to provide gift card numbers or payment details over the phone.
“This is a scam,” the Sheriff’s Office said, noting that deputies never solicit money or gift card information by phone for any reason.
The Sheriff’s Office urges anyone who receives a similar call not to respond or act on the request. Residents should disconnect the call immediately.
Anyone with questions about a suspicious call can contact the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office using the non-emergency number at 315-253-1222 or by email at [email protected].
Officials also encourage residents to share the warning with friends and family to help prevent others from falling victim.
