The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office has issued a public reminder that all snowmobile trails within the county remain closed until January 2, 2026 — weather permitting.
As snowfall begins to accumulate, officials are urging residents to stay off the trails until they officially open. The warning applies to both county-maintained routes and trails that pass through private land.
“Access to private land is a privilege, not a right,” the announcement reads. Trespassing on these properties before trails open could lead to arrest under Section 25.23(2) of the New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Law. Officials also warned that illegal use of private land may prompt landowners to revoke trail access permanently.
Snowmobilers are also reminded to carry physical copies of both their registration and insurance while riding. The Sheriff’s Office highlighted impaired driving and speeding as two major causes of serious snowmobile crashes, urging riders to operate responsibly.
