A fast-moving attic fire sent firefighters scrambling last week just north of the village of Clyde, where crews battled flames, cold weather, and limited water access for hours.
The blaze broke out Thursday around 7:37 p.m. on Route 414. Within two minutes, the first chief on scene confirmed a working structure fire with heavy flames pouring from the attic. Multiple departments were called in to help as firefighters rushed to contain the damage.
Crews from across Wayne County respond

Clyde’s Engine 49 and Quint 3 were among the first to arrive, quickly getting hoses in place and deploying the aerial ladder. Teams from Savannah, Rose, and Lyons followed, along with several tankers to supply water to the rural location outside the hydrant district.
The fire was eventually contained to the second floor and attic, but not before the structure suffered severe smoke and water damage. Frigid temperatures made the effort even tougher, slowing down operations and forcing responders to rotate crews.
Wallington, Seneca Falls, and Junius fire departments also assisted, with some assigned to standby while others were sent directly to the scene for manpower. The Wayne County Tanker Task Force was activated to maintain a steady water supply, and Lyons handled rapid intervention (RIT) operations.
Family escapes safely, thanks first responders
Rebecca Veronica Sue Jaycox, one of the residents, said everyone in the home made it out safely — including their dogs. She shared a message of deep gratitude for those who helped.
“We were all able to make it out and our dogs as well,” she wrote. “We want to give a huge huge thank you to everyone who was there and present. From all these amazing people to the operators who answer the phone and everyone’s family. No words will ever be enough <3”
Multiple agencies assist as road reopens overnight
Emergency crews remained on scene until 1 a.m. Friday. The fire shut down a portion of Route 414 during the response, but the road was reopened after crews cleared.
The Clyde Fire Department was supported by New York State Police, Clyde Police, Wayne County EMS, NYSEG, the Town of Galen Highway Department, and Galen Code Enforcement.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire has not been released.
