The Seneca County Arts Council is showcasing the imaginative work of local artist Roberta Nelson this December at the Artworks Gallery in Seneca Falls.
The month-long exhibit runs from December 3 to 31 inside Abby’s Gallery, a dedicated space within the Artworks Gallery at 109 Fall Street.
Nelson, a board member and frequent workshop instructor at the gallery, blends Neo-Abstraction with a mystical flair in her art. Her work often features flowing, curvilinear rhythms inspired by ocean waves and natural forms. Whether she’s drawing landscapes, florals, or abstract pieces, Nelson brings color and movement to every composition.
She works mainly with colored pencils, watercolor, and layered-paper collage. Her techniques include shading on dark backgrounds using the grisaille method for a luminous effect, and incorporating handmade paper to create soft or bold color tones. Some pieces feature up to 15 layers of paper, carefully shaded to add depth and dimension.
A longtime art teacher in New York’s public schools, Nelson earned her degree in Art Education from Penn State and continued postgraduate work at SUNY Oswego. Her achievements include recognition in Who’s Who of American Teachers and induction into the National Association of Women Artists.
Her work is also on display at The Frick Gallery at the Art Center of Yates County in Penn Yan.
Gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to call ahead at 315-257-0201 to ensure the gallery is staffed. More details are available at www.artsinseneca.org.
