A gray fox found in the Town of Conesus has tested positive for rabies, according to the Livingston County Department of Health.
Officials say the animal came into contact with two vaccinated pets. Both animals are receiving rabies booster shots as a precaution. No humans were exposed.
The rabies case was confirmed by a New York State Health Department lab on November 26. Public Health Director Jennifer Rodriguez said the virus, which attacks the central nervous system, is most often found in raccoons, skunks, and bats in the region.
Health officials urge residents to avoid unfamiliar wild or domestic animals, even if they seem friendly. They also stress the importance of keeping pets up to date on their rabies vaccinations. New York State law requires all dogs, cats, and ferrets to be vaccinated starting at 4 months old.
The county offers free rabies clinics throughout the year. For more information, contact the Livingston County Department of Health at 585-243-7280 or visit www.livingstoncountyny.gov/eh .
