Lloyd F. Rathbun III spent years in the military — now he’s making his mark as an artist and leader at Cayuga Community College.
The Marine Corps veteran is majoring in Studio Art and Design, where he’s known for bold, rhythmic paintings and a commitment to campus life that’s inspiring both students and faculty.
Rathbun enlisted in 2001 and served as an infantry platoon leader. He was seriously wounded by artillery fire in Iraq in 2004 and spent three months recovering at Walter Reed before continuing his service until 2009. He was awarded a Purple Heart for his actions.
Back home in New York, he worked various jobs before deciding to return to school and pursue his passion for art.
“Lloyd has great line quality and boldness in his drawings and paintings,” said Professor Melissa Johnson, who directs Cayuga’s art program. “You can see his love of music in the marks he makes — dynamic, energetic, and full of life.”
Giving back through art
On campus, Rathbun is involved in several groups, including the Veterans Club and Art Club, where he serves as president. He’s also vice president of Cayuga’s emerging NAMI On-Campus chapter, which promotes mental health support for students.
Off campus, he’s donating his artwork to help other veterans. Rathbun is auctioning two original paintings — “Pond” and “N, N, N, N” — with proceeds going to the Wounded Warrior Project, which supported him during his recovery.
“This makes me feel better because I’m giving to an organization that helped me,” he said. “I just wanted to do it to say thank you.”
