OJ Simpson estate to pay $58M in decades-old wrongful death lawsuit

More than 30 years after the murders that gripped the nation, O.J. Simpson’s estate has agreed to pay nearly $58 million to the family of Ron Goldman, according to newly reported court documents.

The decision marks a dramatic reversal from earlier statements made by Simpson’s estate executor, Malcolm LaVergne, who previously indicated Goldman would receive nothing. Now, LaVergne has formally accepted Goldman’s creditor claim of $57,997,858.12, plus 30 years of interest.

The civil case that never faded

Goldman was killed alongside Nicole Brown Simpson, O.J. Simpson’s ex-wife, on June 12, 1994. While Simpson was acquitted of their murders in criminal court, he was found liable in civil court in 1997 and ordered to pay $33.5 million to the Goldman and Brown families.

Much of that judgment went unpaid during Simpson’s lifetime. He died in April 2024 at age 76 following a battle with cancer.

Now, with his estate in probate, Goldman’s decades-long pursuit for accountability may finally yield a partial payout.

What’s in the estate?

LaVergne says the estate will attempt to honor the payment using funds raised from auctioning Simpson’s remaining possessions—though many items, he admits, have been stolen or lost over the years.

The only other claims LaVergne is accepting are:

  • Internal Revenue Service (IRS): The amount owed is undisclosed.
  • California tax claim: Reported at $636,945.

LaVergne has rejected most other creditor claims.

Why now?

The timing and tone of this development come as a surprise.

Following Simpson’s death, LaVergne publicly stated he had no plans to pay the Goldman family. His shift in stance remains unexplained, but legally, the estate would likely face mounting pressure to satisfy the long-standing civil judgment.

“The sum was discussed with Goldman,” LaVergne confirmed to TMZ.

The payment is not guaranteed in full, but it signals the first serious effort by Simpson’s estate to meet any part of the financial obligation.

Legacy of the case

The 1994 murders and 1995 criminal trial made O.J. Simpson a defining figure in American pop culture. The verdict split public opinion, sparked national debates on race and justice, and left families of the victims waiting decades for restitution.

The civil case that followed in 1997 was the first time a U.S. court officially found Simpson liable for the deaths of Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson. Despite the judgment, Simpson managed to shield most of his income and assets from seizure.

That evasion may finally be ending.
