Cameron Pond reopens after dam safety upgrades

Cameron Pond is back open for public use after a months-long maintenance project aimed at improving dam safety and protecting nearby communities from flood risk.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced the reopening Monday, confirming that work on the dam — located in Steuben County’s Cameron State Forest — is now complete and meets state safety standards.

Crews began the project in March 2025, closing the area to make improvements to the pond’s auxiliary spillway, low-level outlet, and earthen embankment. The access road and parking lot were also regraded and covered with fresh gravel.

Officials say the upgrades were necessary to reduce the risk of flooding, preserve natural habitats, and protect public safety in the region.

Outdoor recreation is now allowed at Cameron Pond, though the water level remains low for the time being.

The project was funded through New York Works, a state initiative that supports infrastructure upgrades and environmental protection efforts across the state.
