Livingston County officials are spotlighting the need for permanent homes for children in foster care as they recognize November as Adoption Awareness Month.
The County Board of Supervisors issued a formal proclamation to mark the occasion, aligning with the national effort to raise awareness and celebrate families who adopt.
Adoption Awareness Month began in 1995 to highlight the urgent need to connect children in foster care with stable, loving families. It also honors the foster parents and caregivers who provide a vital safety net while children wait for permanent placements.
In New York State, about 14,000 children are currently in foster care, with approximately 1,400 seeking adoption, according to the Office of Children and Family Services. As of September, Livingston County’s Department of Social Services reported 24 children in foster care locally.
County officials say caseworkers play a key role in both helping families reunify and working with partner agencies to find suitable foster and adoptive homes.
“Adoption can offer the hope of a better tomorrow,” the proclamation states, encouraging residents to consider becoming foster or adoptive parents.
