Rochester Regional Health’s Lipson Cancer Institute earns national honor, welcomes new leadership

Rochester Regional Health’s oncology program is entering a new era — and doing so with national recognition and fresh leadership at the helm.

The Lipson Cancer Institute has been named one of the Top 100 Health Systems with Outstanding Oncology Programs by Becker’s Hospital Review, a designation that highlights RRH’s quality of care, patient outcomes, and commitment to innovation. It’s the second time the health system has earned this national distinction.

The Becker’s recognition follows a three-year full accreditation as a Network Cancer Program from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. It confirms what many patients in Western New York and the Finger Lakes already know: world-class cancer care is available close to home.

“This program has earned its reputation for delivering excellent, compassionate care,” said Dr. Jeffrey Haynes, a longtime leader with the Lipson Cancer Institute.

Dr. Haynes, a board-certified radiation oncologist, has been named Executive Medical Director for the Oncology Service Line, stepping into the role previously held by Dr. Pradyumna “Prad” Phatak, who led the program from its inception.

Dr. Haynes emphasized continued innovation and access: “Our focus will remain on advancing innovation, expanding access, and ensuring every patient receives the highest quality of care with dignity and compassion.”

Dr. Phatak will receive the ICON Award from the Rochester Business Journal for his decades of service and leadership in cancer care. He now serves as Medical Director of Precision Medicine for RRH and leads GenoWell, a regional genetic screening initiative aimed at early cancer risk detection and personalized care.

“Dr. Phatak’s impact on this program and our community is immeasurable,” said Dr. Haynes. “His dedication set the standard for what cancer care should be.”

The Lipson Cancer Institute serves 25,000 patients annually across 13 counties and offers services ranging from radiation therapy and clinical trials to genetic testing and mental health support. Its Breast Center is the first in New York to earn the Certified Quality Breast Center of Excellence designation.

With a foundation built on 40 years of continuous accreditation and now recognized as one of the best in the country, the Lipson Cancer Institute is poised to continue delivering exceptional care for years to come.
