Poll shows two-thirds of Americans believe U.S. is on wrong track

Two-thirds of Americans say the country has “gotten pretty seriously off on the wrong track,” according to a new poll by ABC News, The Washington Post, and Ipsos. The survey found 67% of respondents view the nation’s direction negatively, while just 32% think things are going the right way.

The poll reveals deep partisan divisions: 95% of Democrats and 77% of independents said the country is on the wrong path, compared with only 29% of Republicans. Across demographic groups, 87% of Black respondents, 71% of Hispanics, 71% of Asians, and 61% of white Americans shared that pessimistic view.

Both political parties received poor marks for being “in touch” with public concerns. Sixty-eight percent said Democrats are out of touch, compared with 61% who said the same about Republicans. Former President Donald Trump fared similarly, with 63% viewing him as disconnected from average Americans.

The poll surveyed 2,725 adults between Oct. 24 and 28 and carries a margin of error of 1.9 percentage points. Despite the negativity, the share of Americans saying the country is off track has slightly improved from 75% recorded before the 2024 election.
