A Mentz resident is facing a felony weapon charge after deputies say he was found with an unregistered, self-made firearm.
The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office arrested 55-year-old Eric S. Ewald on October 27. He was charged with criminal possession of a firearm, a Class E felony, following an investigation in the Town of Mentz.
Deputies say Ewald was in possession of an unserialized pistol he manufactured himself — often referred to as a “ghost gun” because it lacks a traceable serial number.
Ewald was processed at the Sheriff’s Office and released with an appearance ticket. He’s due back in Mentz Town Court on November 10.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office or leave an anonymous tip through the county’s SaferWatch app.
