North Carolina man killed in early morning Thruway crash in Cayuga County

A North Carolina man was killed early Monday after a crash involving multiple vehicles on the New York State Thruway in Cayuga County.

State police said the crash happened around 4:17 a.m. on Interstate 90 eastbound in the town of Mentz, when a westbound passenger vehicle crossed the median into oncoming traffic.

According to investigators, the vehicle struck a guide rail after entering the eastbound lanes and came to rest partially in the roadway on a curve. While one eastbound tractor-trailer was able to avoid the vehicle, a second truck struck the disabled car and its driver.

The driver of the passenger vehicle, identified as 41-year-old Robert McFall of North Carolina, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The operator of the tractor-trailer, a 59-year-old Florida man, was not injured.

Multiple units, including the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Collision Reconstruction Unit, and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, responded to the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
