A Cayuga County man is facing a misdemeanor charge after authorities say multiple dogs were kept for months inside a residence under conditions deemed unfit for any animal.
The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office reported that Kenneth E. Reeves, 68, of Mentz, was charged May 3 with failing to provide proper sustenance for animals following an investigation in the Town of Aurelius.
Deputies first responded to the property April 27 on a report of possible animal cruelty. Over the course of several days, investigators determined that several dogs had been left inside the home for extended periods without being taken outside, while the interior of the residence had not been cleaned.
Authorities said Reeves had been returning to the property and providing some food and water, but the overall conditions inside were described as unlivable for the animals.
The dogs were removed from the residence with assistance from the Greater Cayuga SPCA. Several were surrendered to the organization for care.
Reeves was issued an appearance ticket and is scheduled to answer the charge in Aurelius Town Court on May 20 at 6 p.m.
The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities said anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.
