House Speaker Mike Johnson defended Donald Trump’s surprise decision to commute George Santos’ sentence after just three months, saying he believes in “redemption,” according to Politico.
Santos had been serving seven years for wire fraud and identity theft when Trump abruptly granted clemency. Some New York Republicans slammed the move, saying Santos’ victims still haven’t been repaid.
Santos says he’ll follow the law on restitution but didn’t commit to paying back the $370K. He also said he has no plans to run for office again—at least for the next decade.
