United Way pushes to hit goal in personal care drive

United Way of Cayuga County is just 600 items shy of its goal in this year’s personal care drive — and there’s still time to help.

So far, the countywide effort has brought in 2,406 hygiene items like soap, toothpaste, and shampoo. The drive runs through Halloween and aims to hit 3,000 total items for people in need.

Donations are being accepted at the Cayuga County Chamber of Commerce in Auburn or at United Way’s Annual Meeting on Oct. 22 at Owen Orchards. That event kicks off at 4 p.m. with snacks, cider, and a community volunteer fair.

This week, 14 volunteers gathered to sort, count, and pack the donated items for delivery. Nineteen local food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters will receive the boxes, including Auburn Rescue Mission, Safe & Warm, SS Peter & John Episcopal Soup Kitchen, and The Salvation Army.

United Way partnered with 26 local donation sites and received support from more than a dozen sponsors, including Wegmans, Nucor Steel Auburn, Cayuga Lake National Bank, and Auburn Community Hospital.
