Ithaca Police say a man was arrested and a handgun recovered during a patrol at the Green Street Parking Garage as part of an ongoing investigation into recent car break-ins.
Officers on foot patrol spotted a man moving between parked vehicles just after midnight on October 13. They identified him as 40-year-old Justin Carl, an Ithaca resident.
Police say they approached Carl to question him about a string of larcenies involving vehicle break-ins across the city. When they tried to detain him, he became combative and resisted arrest. During the struggle, a Glock-style handgun reportedly fell from Carl’s sweatshirt pocket.
Officers were able to safely take him into custody after a brief altercation. Carl sustained minor injuries. No officers were hurt.
Carl was charged with obstruction of governmental administration, resisting arrest, and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Police say additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
The Ithaca Police Department is urging residents to stay alert, lock their vehicles, and report suspicious activity.
