NYSEG rate hike draws backlash at public hearing

Frustrated NYSEG customers packed an Ithaca hearing to protest proposed double-digit rate hikes, according to WENY News.

The utility wants to raise electric bills by $33 and gas bills by $33.50 per month starting in 2026. NYSEG says the hike would fund infrastructure upgrades and storm response. But residents blasted the plan, citing poor customer service and confusing billing.

The state’s Public Service Commission will decide whether to approve the increase. Public comments are open through Oct. 24, with virtual sessions set for Oct. 21.
