Animals found in Geneva apartment; woman arrested

A dog and three kittens were rescued from a cockroach-infested apartment in Geneva after officers responded to a welfare check late Sunday morning.

Police say 40-year-old Sara Christensen had left the animals behind while moving out of her South Main Street apartment.

When officers arrived around 9:30 a.m., they reported a strong odor of feces and urine coming from inside the unit. Cockroaches were crawling out from under the front door.

Inside, they found three grey kittens and a female tan pit bull mix living in unsanitary conditions. Feces covered parts of the apartment, and there was no food or water available for the animals.

Staff from the Ontario County Humane Society removed all four animals. Christensen was located and arrested.

She faces eight misdemeanor charges: four counts of animal neglect and four counts of failing to provide food or water to an impounded animal.

Christensen gave up ownership of the animals, who are now being cared for at the Happy Tails Animal Shelter. The shelter says they’ll be put up for adoption soon.

The Geneva Police Department and Ontario County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the investigation.
