Animal abuse investigations in Wayne County will now fall under the sheriff’s office, not the DA, following a vote by county supervisors, according to the Finger Lakes Times.
The move includes creating a dedicated animal services deputy in 2026 to handle the county’s 1,200 animal-related calls each year. The goal is to boost efficiency and improve court outcomes.
Supervisors also approved adding two officers to the drug unit as overdose rates climb — part of a broader push to crack down on narcotics and related crimes.
