Luis Gil pitched six steady innings and the New York Yankees held off the Toronto Blue Jays, 3-1, on Saturday in the Bronx, keeping hopes of an American League East title alive.
Gil allowed just one run on three hits and four walks, striking out one before a 106-minute rain delay ended his outing. His biggest moment came in the sixth when Cody Bellinger cut down Bo Bichette at the plate with a strong throw from right field, preserving a one-run lead.
The Yankees capitalized on early mistakes by Toronto starter Chris Bassitt, scoring twice in the second after an error by Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Jasson Domínguez had an RBI single, while Austin Wells added two sacrifice flies, including one in the sixth that stretched the lead to 3-1.
From there, the bullpen held firm. Fernando Cruz and David Bednar combined for three scoreless innings, with Bednar notching his 21st save.
New York improved to 79-63, trimming Toronto’s division edge to three games as the Blue Jays slipped to 82-60.
